Birla Academy of Art and Culture was founded in 1967 with a vision to encourage and foster growth of arts, crafts and cultural activities at the heart of Calcutta. Our founders Late Basant Kumar and Sarala Birla had established this institution envisioning it as a space for learning and scholarship, made accessible to all and with knowledge sharing at its core. In its 57 years our commitment has been to nurture and work with thousands of young emerging artists, researchers, practitioners and artisans by offering them a platform and supporting them in the early stages of their careers. The Academy’s programs focus on research and academia through community centric activities. Preserving our ancient and contemporary arts heritage through our museum, archives and gallery spaces and promotion of art and cultural practices constitute a large part of our diverse programing at the institute.
