Svikriti 2024
UMA RAY
17 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER 2024
In a world that is increasingly inundated by images and information, how do we respond to its consequential after effects? How does one negotiate between the emotive and automated, nostalgia and experience, between landscapes that we inhabit and those that have turned into wastelands? Between transient memories associated with personal perishable objects and those which may be permanent in nature, but discarded and with no human emotions attached to them.
These and many such ideas form the core of the works that are presented as part of Svikriti this year. Presenting our the Birla Academy Award winners from 2024-2025 - Abhishek Chakraborty, Bikram Dey, Deepanwita Das, Falguni Rawat, Gopa Roy, Pritam Sarkar, Sanjib Barui, Sayandeep Kangsabanik, Shilpa Chakraborty, Sohom Chakraborty and Sriparna Dutta.
Their practices are diverse, each of them rooted in their individual/ familial histories set in the conflicting narratives of the past and present. And from which they have emerged with stories accumulated through generations, carried down or passed on until they become so fragmented or dense with meaning that one has to interpret and reinterpret to make sense of that inheritance. Together they represent the manifold realities of the times we live in. And embracing these diversities of thoughts and practice is what makes this exhibition so unique in nature. We would also like to take this opportunity in extending our gratitude to our Mentors - Anupam Roy, Arpan and Shreya Mukherjee of Studio Goppo, Rishi Barua, Samindranath Majumdar, and Srikanto Paul, for their unwavering support and guidance to our awardees during the awardee mentorship program between May & June.
